Works from the 'Owning Her Desire' series commands a bold and layered interaction with the viewer. The figure is painted on a custom baltic birch cradled panel cut to the shape of the silhouette. This figure panel is stacked and mounted onto a second panel with a veneer of quarter-sawn figured fumed eucalyptus. Defying convention she pops off the wall and stares out at us, demanding to be seen; not to simply look at her but to recognize her autonomy and presence. She owns her sexual desire and pushes back against cultural barriers and the pretexts of obscenity that would keep us from describing it. The 'Owning Her Desire' series was compelled by conversations with my friends; women sharing personal stories and brave insights which are rarely spoken. Depictions within the series are both of my contemporaries as well as images (as in this piece) of women from decades past. In this way, the series explores the ties that weave through generations. This work is also available as a diptych; panel one and two, presented together, to be hung side by side. See listing of both panels together for acquisition of diptych.
