About The Artwork

Many people around the world suffers from mental health problems and Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder is one of them. I am hoping that these series of paintings that I created could open people's hearts and mind and may lead to openness and conversations. I chose the medium to give a heavy texture to symbolised the sufferings of the victims of this health problems. The subject matter and style symbolizes the tortured mind and the dream like scenarios that goes through victims everyday life.

Johnny E.SJ. Otilano is a self-taught artist born in the Philippines, a country rich in culture and history. Johnny graduated from Feati University with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, major in Advertising Design. In 1989, Johnny made his first trip to the U.S. at the invitation of the Philippine Arts Festival in Los Angeles. Johnny was fortunate to be recognized after his painting "Market Place" won Second Place and received the highest winning bid in an art contest sponsored by KVPT Channel 18 for their 20th Great Annual Art Auction in 1997. In 1998 Johnny was awarded as Most Outstanding FilAm Artist by the FilAm Center of Fresno & Vicinity. Johnny's painting, entitled "November 25, 1994," received the People's Choice Award at the Pink Show 2010 and the following year 2011 his painting entitled "Autumn Leaves" received The People's Choice Award and Most Inspiring Entry Award and in 2013 his paintings "My Old Guitar" won the Peoples Choice Award and Margaret Hudson's Choice Award. Johnny has been known for his portrait commissions and landscape paintings. Johnny dreamed about becoming a soldier as a kid to help defend his country, but his interest changed when he started to dabble with art using the four walls of their home. With his artistic blood awakened, He then channeled his energy and passion for his country through arts with a paintbrush filled with bold, striking colors. Johnny's own style was developed with influences of masters and recent artists. The distinctive personal style and technique that he have incorporated in his pieces are spreading paint on raw plywood, and gluing and nailing found objects like soda can pull tabs, old keys, metal chains and gun shells. If he gained recognition, it was for the ability to conjure great emotions and portray a story behind each of his creations. As an established international artist living in Central California, He still carries that passion with dozens of artwork pieces conveying his style and insignia. Johnny exhibited in many galleries here in the U.S. and museums abroad. In addition to the visual art, He composes and writes music that relate to his paintings and that are performed at his shows. Recently one of his painting "Strawberry Fields" was published in Artist Portfolio Magazine Issue 6 page #153. On June 18th 2012 Johnny will be one of the artist showing at The Art Takes Times Square in New York.
