that was my old sofa.
this is called a botarga, which is a suit that people use in carnivals or for marketing. they are very common in Mexico, but you can find them in traditional folk festivities in Spain. I think they are metaphors of our personas, the characters that we build of ourselves.
this fantastic fish and the naked woman have a thing going on. or not and I am just imagining things. something that my mom would not understand: "why does she have to be naked, Cuquita? is that fish about to do something to her?" not sure. what do you think? is this my twisted unconscious, or am I consciously being provocative?
the coast of Oaxaca is a place where black people migrated to, before the independence of Mexico. The mix between Native americans (we called them zapotecos, mixtecos, mixes and many more) and black people is quite rare and they call themselves Afromexicans. My friend, being from Tabasco, which is also where you can find black people in Mexico, feels very much at home there.
the botarga, which is a sort of costume that covers the head and body, is a very regular thing to see in Mexico as promotional resource. It is a tradition that comes from medieval european festivals.

This is a diptych, two figures independent but together, united by the background. I made this painting after visiting my friend Ingrid in Pinotepa Nacional, in the coast of Oaxaca. this was my first trip, and only one so far, to visit a friend. Not family, just a fellow artist. It was important for...

I create images based on my own experience as a woman, twice an immigrant, artist and grandmother of 4. I offer a great range of images, from the sweetest to the melancholic, from energetic to peaceful, always concious of the complexity of life. I paint by memory, do not use any photos or references to copy from. Most of my ideas come from doodling and drawing small sketch notebooks. I use glazing, as in the flemish techninque, to build color layer by layer letting the characters develop their own mood and story. My latest painting are done without blues, loosely and colorfully using the Zorn palette. Since blues have always been related to the religious world, this absence reflects better my intention to remain free of old beliefs that have oppressed women for centuries.
