About The Artwork

A series of small portraits and landscapes. Solenn Marrel tries to capture a glance, an expression on the faces of travelers in the Parisian metro. She then associates them with a landscape, thinking that they might dream to escape there. Each portrait can live alone or be associated with a landscape.

The works of Solenn Marrel are always a reflection based on a the relation between nature and man. They may bring her to represent an overwhelming nature or, on the contrary, express comfort. Some of her characters dialogue with nature and find an echo. Some others seem to express dissonance, unbalance, which is a source of question. Solenn Marrel works by assembling fragments of images such as drawings, gouaches, or monotypes. Then she reproduces them in very diluted acrylic paintings. The sewings, the stains and splashed are welcome. She overlaps layers of colours and then thickens them progressively. By rubbing some parts, the artist gives shape to the material and makes volumes appear. Sometimes the white colour of the canvas appears and becomes light.
