Art Description

Painting: Acrylic and Paint on Canvas.

The edges have become 'launching pads' for 'surfing' space creating a 'floating' sense of place. My relationship with the internet has transformed for me the traditional notion of the way we view space in art works. The edges offer a point of departure and invite the viewer to claim their own space in their mind with their own experiences.

I am inspired by Frank Stella who is 80 years old and still working. An American artist who created wall assemblages and sculptural forms.

Another artist I find inspiring is the late Elizabeth Murray, who died in 2007. She was known for her shaped canvases. She was credited with aiding and bringing back life to art in the late 70s and early 80s.

I use colour as a vehicle for expression, imparting and capturing the essence of place. The urban place has a rhythm - the cars, the chairs, the plants, the noise, the people, the daily life on a street level. The poetics of place, where we rediscover ourselves.

For me, freedom is breaking the restricted chains of the rectangular, creating new shapes - pushing contours into asymmetry and yet contemplating balance.
