"What makes you vulnerable, makes you beautiful". Colour can tell a story or take you on an emotional journey. These colours feel alive, ever shifting and ever moving. They speak of summer haze, sandy coastlines and delicate florals all at once. This striking piece harnesses Japanese aesthetic principles, including Ma. Though all my pieces are purely abstract, upon viewing we intuitively recognise a visual language that mimics the currents of the ocean, natural formations of the earth, a flower in new bloom or the patterns of precious stone. They activate the senses, allowing for immersive visual experiences that transport you outdoors, straight into nature’s arms. **** What is Ma? Ma (間) is a Japanese word which can be roughly translated as “negative space”. In my work I’m intentional about creating spaces between the forms, areas of quiet, of emptiness, like little pauses between sentences. These spaces give the work a unique rhythm. “True beauty is a ray that springs from the sacred depths of the soul, and illuminates the body, just as life springs from the kernel of a stone and gives colour and scent to a flower.” — Rumi

The forms and colours of the natural world deeply inform my painting practice. I am enamored by faded, muddy earth tones, the smoky hues of dawn and dusk. The non-color colours, gray and black, woven delicately through everything. My creative process is never planned, its intuitive, about the moment, discovery and chance. The media I use gives me limited control, allowing the painting to 'grow' itself organically. Still, I feel the need to bring a sense of order. Eliminating areas that feel distracting or unnecessary has become one of the most important aspects of my creative process. Harnessing the Japanese concept of “Ma” (間), meaning ‘interval’ or ‘the space between’, I use white space to bridge chaos and calm, paring the work down to its simplest form, without losing its beauty and meaning. This gives a meditative quality to each piece, as if they have been distilled from chaos into a place of serenity.
