Through stylised abstraction, I capture the essence of these flowers, infusing each painting with a burst of colour and energy. My goal is to highlight the striking beauty of poppies, blending vivid hues with dynamic forms to evoke a sense of joy and admiration for their timeless elegance. As an artist, I've been immersed in creativity since my earliest memories. Drawing, painting, and crafting have been my lifelong passions, nurtured from childhood and continuously evolving. It's a path I couldn't imagine deviating from. My artistic journey has been an ongoing process of observation, practice, and absorption of diverse influences. Exposure to both historical and contemporary artistic greats, coupled with personal experience and educational pursuits, has enriched my craft. Residing near the picturesque Cooks River in the Inner West has blessed me with a daily dose of natural inspiration, from kookaburras to cockatoos and the native flora. I've cultivated my recent series using locally grown flowering gum blossoms, capturing the vibrant scarlet blooms that adorn the streets of Marrickville every January. I firmly believe that inspiration is ever-present; you simply need to pause, observe, and embrace it. In my artwork, I infuse ceramics and textiles, each with its unique narrative. These pieces, whether wonderfully vintage or contemporary treasures, often hail from my travels. When I incorporate, say, a Portuguese bowl into a still life, it transports me to cherished memories, infusing my work with deeper significance. Flowers, intertwined with the memories these objects hold, channel my focus and inspiration. Certain blooms evoke distinct associations with place, culture, and memory, offering an escape from the daily hustle and bustle. I'm drawn to the power of a limited palette, finding it akin to working within a precise design brief. Constraints empower creativity, encouraging earlier experimentation and sparking one's imagination and initiative. Contrastingly, an open colour palette can sometimes muddy the waters with too many ideas in play. For instance, my recent series was inspired by the bold colour combinations of Clarice Cliff porcelain from the early 20th century. Pattern, to me, is a form of textured storytelling. Whether through brushstrokes forming patterns or well-recognised designs, I embrace them all. Patterns enrich my work with history and meaning, offering viewers an intricate layer of interpretation. In these works, I seek a focal point that guides the viewer's eye through the details, ensuring a balance between intricate elements and simplicity. My art gravitates towards bold graphic realism, incorporating impasto to infuse depth and tactile qualities.
