One of my acquaintances here in Renkum, Netherlands is Gerard who is a bicycling enthusiast, photographer, and owner of a local b&b. In this portrait I used all my tools of the trade, a lot of editing, hopefully creating a loose but at the same time a very tight result. I darkened one side of the face and used bright reflections of of the other for effect. There is a story behind the painting: Gerard had recently lost his wife to cancer. Before she passed they took a trip to Tuscany together, to just south of Volterra. Afterward, Gerard bicycled with a friend back to Volterra as a way to deal with his loss and to "close the circle", if you like, in a personal pilgrimage to that place he had shared with her, while she was still able, a precious time they could still have together. The light falls on the face highlighting a very open and joyful personality who, as reflected in the various greens in the background, loves the outdoors and adventure. I darkened the hair a bit (like myself Gerard is graying) but by giving a more youthful look the painting is a more truthful representation of his persona.
