About The Artwork

This was the first of my 'Machinimals' series, an exploration and a critique of machine metaphors for life processes. Part inspired by the paintings of Marshall Arisman and Max Ernst, partly by the work of biologist Rupert Sheldrake and partly from my own experiences and thought processes, it began as one of a number of experiments using a rubber ink roller. The painting sat in the studio in a completely different form for almost a year. At some point I suddenly knew exactly what to do with it. I began by creating textures and looking for emergent suggestions of the eventual form which I then accentuated until I arrived at the final image. The result is strangely alluring and perhaps a little alarming. The textures and colours are so visually interesting and the character of this strange, not quite living thing, so vivid and unusual, if not downright disturbing, that I can hardly wrest my eyes away from it. As the series develops, I'll be experimenting with varying degrees of abstraction, mark making, and collage. Currently, I'm planning some very large scale additions to this series.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Painting crept up on me while I was busy doing other things. Not that I haven’t been drawing and making things as far back as I can recall, I have. It found me early on but seemed to wander off again. Much as I meandered away from my art education, much as I lost all sense of why I became an illustrator. A painting finds me as if stalking something else beyond my view. I’m seized by it and almost always surprised by what it becomes. I rarely employ a formula. Every piece determines the method of its creation and each tends to develop organically, everything in flux until the last moment.
