ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspired by the “chance” quality of Marcel Duchamp's “3 Standard Stoppages,” this work was created by painting on randomly folded raw canvas. I enjoy the unpredictable results that come from allowing the "universe" to play its role in the artmaking process. For this reason I call this series "Quantum Entanglements." I use top quality Sherwin-Williams urethane paints. I do this for the convenience (the store is nearby) and for the industrial look the paints provide on the unprimed canvas.

After graduating from SVA in 1975, Martin spent a lifetime working in the fields of fashion, graphic design, publishing and advertising. Now in retirement from that world, Martin has been putting together a large body of work that is sure to gain the attention of serious art collectors once word gets out about his unique and mercurial talent. Already Justin Kan of Twitch fame has discovered him and bought one of his early pieces from off of Saatchi Art. Martin currently lives and works in the metro area just outside of Washington, DC. Artist Statement: I'm intrigued by the historical fact that Picasso, Duchamp, Mondrian and other early 20th century artists were inspired by modern physics and used its concept of the "fourth dimension" as inspiration for their paradigm-shifting art.** My art seeks to take this "quantum factoid" and use it as a source of inspiration for my own art-making "investigations." Consequently, for the past six years I have created art that incorporates the following themes of modern physics: wave-particle duality ("chance"), quantum entanglements, multi-dimensions, space-time portals, timeline shifts, neutrino bombardments, etc. This approach has manifested into artworks that mix Zen-like "consciousness" with CERN-like "experimentation." Curiously, this automatically aligns me with the 21th century art trend of Casualism. ** Shipping details: Each painting on canvas is shipped rolled up on a tube and inserted into a narrow box. The painting is meant to be re-stretched onto a 54x66 inch stretcher frame. I use the Masterpiece Elite brand, which is available from Blick Art Supplies. "Wrinkle-free" tautness of the re-stretched canvas can be achieved by lightly spraying water to the front and back of canvas. (Once stapled in place.) Until the most recent series, the first stage of my art-making process has involved randomly folding raw canvas and painting the folded canvas. Because of this process, some wrinkles have dried in the paint; thus, becoming permanent "wrinkles in time."]
