About The Artwork

I started on a simple wood panel. I primed all surfaces of the panel to ensure longevity of the piece. On the painting surface I applied roughly 8 layers of gesso and modelling paste to control my surface. This is done with a knife, a roller and careful sanding between each layer. I have a very specific surface texture and absorbability that I like to work with that I obtain through this process. The artwork is unframed and will need to be framed when acquired in order to hang. If you would like me to pick out the frame, which is something I love doing as it is an extension of the artwork, please contact me and we will work out a deal. If not, you can get it professionally framed easily. Work inspiration: Painted from life just outside my studio in the halls of the multi-century old buildings called Bryggen. I live in the city of Bergen, Norway, which is known for its raininess all year long. The model arrived in rain boots but initially posed nude. After the first sitting of about 30 minutes, she said her feet were cold so we decided that her rain boots would be both a solution to her discomfort and a good addition to the painting. We were also drinking beer at the time and I thought the beer can added a bit of local character. The most popular beer brewed in Bergen is called Hansa and has an iconic green can.

Born and raised in California, the artist Matthew Betancourt (1989) has been drawing and painting for as long as he can remember. - He recalls a pivotal moment from his childhood when drawing his family cat: the realisation and astonishment that he had the power to portray the world around him. Since that moment, the process of portraying the world through painting and drawing has been central to his life. The same childlike curiosity and a determination to master his medium continue to drive his practice to this day. - His approach to self learning - trial and error, comparison and analysis - echoes his interest in science (he graduated with a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering in 2017). In the same year, the self-taught artist won the Santa Maria Utility Box Contest. It was after winning the contest that painting went from being an obsessive hobby to a passionate full-time pursuit. - Matthew moved to Norway in 2017 and lives with his wife in Bergen. In his studio in the historic centre of Bryggen, he dedicates his time to developing his artistic skills. He draws inspiration from Rembrandt and Odd Nerdrum, two artists unafraid to explore different artistic territories to discover their own paths forward. - Portraiture and figure painting are his passions in the studio, where passersby sit and enable him to refine and develop his painting techniques. Outside of the studio, his MiniTins series captures the places where he finds most peace.
