Art Description

Painting: Oil on Wood.

One of a series of paintings inspired by a piece of piano music by the french composer Maurice Ravel. Each of these paintings is on a bespoke birch panel which is primed up to 20 times so that the surface is as smooth as glass. Ravel’s Pavane for solo piano is one of his most famous works. These small studies explore my emotional response to the music which is translated into colour and mark. Using a process of painting and sanding back I gradually find my own harmony within the painted space. The final marks, made with brush and palette knife are the melody. By painting on small wood panels I have been able to achieve a sense of intimacy – that feeling I have when I am alone in my studio listening to the music.

THREE OF THE PAINTINGS IN THIS SERIES HAVE BEEN SOLD TO CLARIDGES HOTEL IN LONDON FOR THEIR NEW MODERN ART COLLECTION.

Framed in black with a gold edge.
