Hans Heysen was an award winning German Australian Landscape Painter. In 1913 he painted Red Gold gums, a work that featured bullock/ cattle trudging along a track, between two towering gums, towards a range of hills and a township. I grew up on a cattle stud not far from this site, and my grandfather painted an appropriation of his painting in 1973. In 2019 my painterly research led me back to these two works and a series of studies of the location and the paintings started to emerge. Each iteration i have created has toyed with themes of memory, the human condition, colonisation and our evolving relationship with travel, the land and art. I hope the viewer feels the hope of the journey towards the future, freedom of expression and joy in the colours of nature. Oil painting is classical, appropriations of the masters and looking to the ancestors for foundational strength is a classical concept, and this post impressionist, post pop, post romantic style of brush mark and colour interpretation is taking these themes to the present moment. They request an immediacy.
