The world of social media and constant ads, push us to rush through everything. Through her art, Chara Kontopoulou invites people to slow down and truly observe in a more meaningful way. As we are inherently drawn to anything that shines, she uses resin for its shiny and reflective allure. Similarly, she employs color for its emotional resonance and incorporates large organic forms for their meditative qualities. As the viewers come closer to the artwork they realize what they see is not just a shiny surface, but multiple layers of paint, texture, resin and an actual depth which creates a pseudo-three dimensional effect. Due to the nature of the materials you can see different reflections of yourself and the space inside the painting. In the end, the viewers become the main subject of the painting, giving a whole new perspective to the artwork. As their reflection is mirrored back, they create their own distracted poetic image, which is fascinating and seductive, in a very simple and human way. The main purpose of this artwork is offer a pause: how easy is to turn passive vision into an exploring tool of experience?

Chara Kontopoulou is a visual artist, born in 1993 in Cyprus. She received her Bachelor of Visual and Applied Arts from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and her Masters of Arts Management from the University of Manchester, UK. Chara creates abstract paintings on large scale canvases, aiming to interact with the viewer and turn his passive vision into an exploring tool of experience. Her paintings are based on abstract, analytical, and organic art. She uses multiple layers of resin, paint, and other materials to create an actual depth or the illusion of a 3D painting. As the paintings are consisted by alternate layers of resin and countless painting strokes, the overall artwork creates the illusion of a 3D painting. Due to the nature of the medium, the outcome is a shiny and reflective surface, the aim of which is to mirror the viewer and make him part of the artwork. Chara Kontopoulou participated in group exhibitions in Europe. She also volunteers in museums and charities and organizes creative workshops with the purpose to engage people with arts.
