ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Black & white with some red; acrylic painting on coated paper of sturdy quality. It makes part of the series "Pre-millennium lovers" which was made under the wider idea/series "A year black & white" of 1998-99. 'Red Queen' was inspired by the nineties french movie 'Queen Margot' (La Reine Margot). This is the only one in the series with red color added to the black & white structure. You can read about this and about the series and its time here: The edges of the paper are not cut straight so the size is given approximately; they are also rough which goes together with the identity of the work. The nineties were a super intense time for me and in general I believe, as we were preparing for an end and a new beginning. The work is sent in a tube and needs to be framed.

"In her paintings we see how a hyper sensitive person perceives the world" S. Kapnissi is a trained painter working on revealing the free true space that we all hide within and that gives purpose in life; just like the sunshine does and the warmth of a real home. "My paintings depict the intensity of life; bright colors or black and white, abstract or figurative, my images point at Life and at our humanity that we evoke through beauty." S. Kapnissi (Athens, 1966) studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University in Greece and at the Free Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague, the Netherlands; for a period as a NUFFIC grantee. She is founding member of the Gaidaro group which from 1999-2008 presented projects advocating for wide participation in the art practice and presentation. Painting is her main activity which often expands to engraving, textile, video and text. Website:
