About The Artwork

Inspired by Matisse’s “The Red Studio”, this painting reflects a 2-year stretch of bliss and grief in the artist's life as she struggled to cope with mental illness while living in a tiny live/work studio with her partner. This piece is about a woman stuck between what is real and what is not. She is monumental in one sense, yet also barely there, part of the body even undefined, ambiguous. She is caught between worlds, or maybe selves, suspended in a pool of manic red-orange. "Sometimes this red feels like a purgatory of anxiety, and other times like wide-open bliss—the mind offers ultimate freedom. So it turns out she is lady liberty, bare-chested as usual, except with psychedelic legs... However, the mind can also feel like a personal hell, meaning this woman is also prone to being encircled by fires she vaguely remembers starting herself, and boy does she burn."

www.hazelthepainter.com /// @hazelthepainter /// Hazel Miller’s paintings feature lush botanical life, statuesque figures, and wild animals and insects. Her work demonstrates an interest in the overlapping fields of natural history and art history. Themes of her work range from impermanence and spirituality to metaphysics and deep time. Miller's paintings are characterized by imaginative color palettes and a close attention to brushstroke textures. Her most prominent stylistic inspirations include Modernist experiments in semi-abstraction and sumi-e painting methods and philosophy. Originally from San Antonio, TX (b. 1993), Miller now calls Spokane, WA her home. She graduated from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2016 (Rose City Scholarship) and is a recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant (2018). Miller had her first solo show, “The Black Universe” in 2021 at Terrain Gallery in Spokane, WA. NOTE: Most large paintings are shipped rolled in a tube, but many can be stretched and shipped in a box or crate upon request. Please inquire about specific piece for more info.
