Historically, there is a bias of female figures within art. Essentially, it was in relation to the male gaze, the pleasure of looking at a time when men believed that they were superior to women rather than equals. Unfortunately, some men and cultures still feel this way. Furthermore, it could be argued that for a male to paint a female, their primary intention is for a male audience and/or their own gratification. The depiction of gender is really important. It is not the fact that the subject is male or female but human. And in relation to my practice; identifiable as a person; to have their own identity yet to be denied or have their distinctiveness obstructed or obscured to attempt a greater connection to the representation; some entity that an audience can identify with and/ or interpret dependent on cultural conventions.

Francis Reynolds is a British Artist who lives and works in Cambridgeshire, England. He returned to education as a mature student in 2007 to study Fine Art. Reynolds graduated with a Fine Art BA at Loughborough University in 2012. Since graduating, Francis started a family yet still achieves regular exhibitions nationally together with instructing Art students at a local academy. His paintings are held in Private collections throughout the UK and internationally. Reynolds’ practice can be seen to be quite destructive in as far as process. However, it can be said that the passive/ aggressive nature of the paintings lends themselves to the very nature of the human condition. Reynolds’ outcomes strive to question and reinvigorate the subject; its historical and contemporary context. Together with consolidating ideas of deconstruction; an act of taking apart and rebuilding. This may also highlight the deconstruction of conventions and what is expected from representational painting. The body of work can be seen to emphasise process by exaggerating the application and meticulous methodology through thin layers of paint and blocks of colour. This functions as a way of viewing what was there from past layers, and where decisions in the reconstruction of form were made.
