A neo-tropical bird at home in high cloudy rainforests all the way between Mexico to Panama. Once a sacred bird to ancient Mayas and Aztecs, it was hunted for their brilliant soft red chest feathers. In the case of males, their long waved blue or green-turquoise train which can be up to one meter long were used for ceremonial headdresses. It is the proud symbol Bird of Guatemala however sadly in great danger of losing its last habitats. To my joy, much loved and treasured by bird lovers all over in Costa Rica, were some protected land offers refuge and new opportunity in eco-tourism. I had my first encounter with the quetzal as a stuffed little bird, 200 years old at the exhibition in Vienna (Museum of Ethnology) for the original Headdress from the Mexican Montezuma King - the Moctezuma II, Aztec emperor at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Being totally overwhelmed by the beauty of such feathers, I fell in love with this bird there and then. This led me to a spiritual search to visit Costa Rica some 18 months later. Still, I have yet to meet "my" Quetzal so I am sure to come again. Meanwhile, I will keep painting this magical bird. By the way - The original (Headdress) still is in Vienna and I feel strongly it should be returned to Mexico City, where it rightly belongs. I hope that some of my love and fascination with the beautiful Quetzal sparks over to you. The work is unframed and will be delivered rolled in a tube. I can advise you on care and hanging style or displaying possibilities for silk art. call me to save on shipping costs.
