Bold, loose, yet highly expressive and intimately detailed brush strokes are used to hand paint his portraiture pieces, and he places a great emphasis on making the sharpness of his line work his piece’s focal point. He then uses an airbrush to create the contrasting soft tonal elements. The work is a natural yet impressionist view on the human form and creates an aesthetic that is semi realism through detailed, ornate intricacy of lineal work. Before the painting is complete Chapman turns his hand to collaborating loose free brush work to create fluttering drips and hues of vibrant neon. This is what gives his paintings their dark electricity – their ‘movement’. The portraits are mostly monochromatic with vibrant loose neon backgrounds.’ Chapman’s alter ego – the Ocean Series Christian has a second side to his painting, an alter ago if you will. This is him tapping into his spiritual self and manifest themselves in the form of his Ocean Series. He paints the sunrise over the ocean with a visceral energy many artists are lacking, and pieces like ‘Aqua Earth’ and ‘Ascension II’ have the power themselves to take you on a trance into an ethereal place. These are Chapman’s visions – taken straight from the sea and his love for the ocean. Relentless, cleansing, raw, and void of control. Christian’s works are prominent through the United States, Canada, Australia, and throughout Europe. As well as his love for the ocean, he loves music (as seen through many of his musician portraitures) and in his spare time plays the guitar. An artist for over 20 years, Chapman has taken huge inspiration from his mother, who in her own right was an amazing portrait artist, fashion illustrator, and art tutor.
