Rose The sentence "A Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose." was written by Gertrude Stein as part of the 1913 poem "Sacred Emily", which appeared in the 1922 book Geography and Plays. In that poem, the first "Rose" is the name of a person. Stein later used variations on the sentence in other writings, and "A rose is a rose is a rose" is among her most famous quotations, often interpreted as meaning "things are what they are", a statement of the law of identity. In Stein's view, the sentence expresses the fact that simply using the name of a thing already invokes the imagery and emotions associated with it. She herself said to an audience at Oxford University that the statement referred to the fact that when the Romantics used the word "rose", it had a direct relationship to an actual rose. For later periods in literature this would no longer be true. The eras following Romanticism, notably the modern era, use the word rose to refer to the actual rose, yet they also imply, through the use of the word, the archetypical elements of the romantic era. To all the women out there may Rose remind you, that you too are a beautiful rose. Maybe today others make you feel, that you are the thorns, that is okay, Roses have thorns...

I am a qualified "old method" lead glass artist of ASGLA “The Association of Stained Glass Lamp/Window artists”, with a love for painting. My inspiration comes from a fondness for Elizabethan portraiture, fuelled by my passion for Shakespeare. At the age of 9 my leaning towards the arts were already evident when I attended the local art school, Hugo Naude in a small town in South Africa. From thereon I studied art history till my final year in high school. Shakespeare really became a day and night read when my English teacher introduced us to Othello. As a stained glass artist also specialising in painting figures on glass as in churches , the vision is to paint old masters, obviously not near there, but how I see them in a sort of childlike manner. Most young girls dream of living in a chateau and every room filled with beautiful old timers paintings and stained glass windows. With every painting I feel a sense of accomplishment, getting nearer to the chateau life. My paintings are mostly concerned with the issues of human life, love, loss, desire, friendship and betrayal, all that Shakespeare so loved. I hope that the viewers will see some personality in my work, that the eyes might tell you something of the characters feelings, or invoke some feeling in yourself that brings a smile. My abstract art side is like a weekend breakaway, and it gives me an immense feeling of freedom from the smell and sounds of lead, soldering and stained glass hammers. I hope that this side will also bring that to
