This painting is the second in a series about shared human life experiences. Death & decay is symbolised by the skulls imposed on the nudes. We are all naked & vulnerable when we are born to this world and again when we leave it in death. The depiction of the landscape and the inclusion of my own pet oriental cat reminds us of the cycle of death and rebirth which we share with our environment & fellow animals. However, the skulls symbolise more than just death. The modern day idea of beauty is no longer just a simple matter of looking youthful and healthy. Modern day beauties aspire to ‘bigger & smoother is better’. Friedlander’s work shows the female nude in her natural state. It has been described as “shocking” in recent reviews. But why is an image of a woman as nature intended more shocking than a woman with go-bigger injectables? ..

My Artist Statement Human behaviour in the west contributes to global warming & destroys the natural environment. The production of plastics & consumption of fossil fuels & animal consumption, hunting & experimentation all contribute to a sickening human legacy. My paintings use colour to evoke emotional responses in the viewer. Others may also feature birth and/or death themes. In particular, my depiction of the female nude reminds us of our own mortality. Naked, is how we arrive, and depart this world regardless of our earthly possessions. My Artist Practice My central practice is life painting in which I have studied the human figure for over 30 years. I develop life studies into final paintings in my studio; changing the composition & adding context to explore a theme or particular idea in a painting. When I combine the figurative with the abstract within the same painting I will use colour washes to unify the compositional elements. Colour is my chosen means of emotional expression.
