Runaway Sea was inspired by my home state of Arizona's red cliffs in Sedona and Havasupai. I've always loved the stark color contrast of the coppery cliffs with the blue of the sky and teals of the water. I worked in layers to create a true sense of depth on this. Each resin layer takes a couple of days to cure before I can pour the next so I have time to really strategize on how to build depth. There is so much movement in this piece as the waves thrash about and the stoic cliff remains a barrier unchanged. As different light hits the layers throughout the day, you can see new aspects of the painting aglow in the light. Especially in the cliffs can you see different textures light up. It's a beautifully large piece at 20x45 and it can hang in any orientation you like. I have included a vertical and horizontal option in the pictures so it can best fit the space you are aiming for.

What is Resin?

Resin is like a liquid glass. It is a two-part epoxy that once mixed, starts to harden within the hour.

I mix resin with various pigments and then work with a blowtorch and knife to paint these scenes.

Some paintings have up to 5 layers of resin, each taking 72 hours to fully cure. You can see through the layers like looking through glass or water. Once cured, it is brilliantly shiny like glass and also robustly durable like a countertop. Resin is so durable it is even used to make surfboards using similar processes as to how I create my paintings.
