ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I was inspired by a new friend of mine. Her husband was a famous member of congress. His portrait was painted by a young black artist in Baltimore. I was inspired by his painting and began looking at photos of African Americans. This led my interest in painting women of color and that search led me to photos of Black African Women. There are so many shades of color. And then adding objects, decoration, and clothing brings out the character and vibrance of these women.

I have always been an artist in one form or another. I was raised in the Washington DC. area. I moved to Santa Barbara in 1970. While studying under James Jarvaise at the Santa Barbara Art Institute, I found myself being immersed in a world of not only painting and art, but of culture, design and architecture. In 1976 I moved to Baltimore Maryland. While at Maryland Institute Graduate School of Art, I studied under Sal Scarpitta. Sal's world was a continuation of Jim's. Art was twenty four hours a day. Looking back you realize that art surrounded us in many ways. For the next fifty six years art became my background with everything I did.
