About The Artwork

St Ives in June is part of the “Mermaids of St Ives” collection I spent a couple of years living sketching and painting in St Ives, Cornwall and have made many art trips to the seaside town over the years. This has helped my understanding and appreciation of its magical qualities, becoming mesmerised by the beauty and quality of the light that the place is blessed to receive. This light plays tricks on reflections from the sky on water and creates amazing shadows across the beaches and buildings, constantly changing colours and intensity throughout the day. The tides gone out and the boats are at rest on the warm golden sand as I looked back across St Ives harbour to the RNLI lifeboat house on the opposite quayside corner from Seaview Place. My viewing point was by the old custom house at Smeatons Pier. The vivid light makes the pools of seawater shine bright in contrast to the shadows that descend on the granite buildings on the quayside that is Wharf Road, by St Ia’s church. The sun casts shadows creating refrigerator like cold spots along the quay, whilst the boats bask resplendent in the warmth of the bay. This painting gives a sense of perspective of the steep hilly nature of the town behind the quay and church as the old granite terraces and painted Edwardian houses catch glimpses of warmth from the hot afternoon summer sun in June. At low tide the boats nestle on the sand awaiting the swelling return of the sea to come. I have tried to demonstrate the mood of the town, and memories of walking on that beach on a summer's day, in the painting and how that contrasts with the cool granite building shadows beyond. I hope it brings you as much of that sense of experience and pleasure as it did for me in creating it.

Inspired by the concept of change as a constant in life - whether it's air, water, earth or fire. I feel compelled to capture the mood, sense of movement and effects changing light has on everything. To date my key artistic influences have been the lives and works of Turner, Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali and Rothko. I am motivated by impressionism, with a love of the energy of abstract and I aim to move more in that direction. I try to impart the continuous abstract qualities and colour of life in my work Living by the sea in Cornwall gives me perspective to interpreting colours I see on a daily basis and capturing that sense of place in time. www.littlecornishkitchen.com website LIVE Please twitter me @McCurdieArt Facebook us at littlecornishkitchen
