Painting: Oil on Canvas.

Currently I am exploring water: what happens on its surface, how it varies, how light plays on it, how its moods change. Water is continuously moving and so it provides the onlooker with a continuously changing picture. I find oil paint and the fluidity of linseed oil the perfect medium with which to capture my subject.

I have come to paint in this particular style, which I would call abstracted realism. Abstracted because the work is not merely an attempt to depict a real object, but its main concern is with colours, lines, shapes and rhythms that combine to form the work. What is important with this style of painting is the emotions behind the real life object, namely the water, the fish and the seaweed.

It is my intention to create beautifully crafted and highly detailed art works. The quality I aspire to create is not only one of technical excellence, but also one of emotional elevation. I hope that those who view my work and choose to live with it will experience emotional, physical and psychological upliftment.

If you were to purchase this painting you would receive it very well packaged. I make my own boxes out of Plywood. These are very sturdy, but do not weigh as much as the wooden crates. If cost need to be kept down I can also remove the canvas from it's stretcher. I then carefully roll it up, wrap it in a protective sheet and place it in a PVC pipe (plastic plumbing pipe). This option is cheaper to ship, but then you need a reliable framer or art supply shop who can make a new stretcher for you. I suggest the stretcher not be made before you have the painting in your hand so that it can be made to the exact dimensions. I do paint around the edges of my canvas so the painting does not need to be framed and is very beautiful all round.

I was born in South Africa in 1970. As a child we moved from Pietermaritzburg to Pretoria to Rustenburg to Jeffries Bay to Stellenbosch to Harare, finally settling in Cape Town. I spent my last year of school in Oxford, Ohio as an exchange student and then returned to Stellenbosch, where I completed a BA Degree in Graphic Design. For the next decade I lived in Northern Alberta, followed by a couple of years thawing out on the Island of Saipan. Thereafter I returned to South Africa via Ireland, and a few more years in Canada. I currently spend my time between South Africa and Canada. In South Africa I reside next to the Atlantic Ocean in a suburb nestled between the Twelve Apostles, Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and the Ocean. It is truly one of the most beautiful places on the planet. In Canada I live on the North Western Pacific Coast. more to follow....
