About The Artwork
In these paintings, I attempt to capture the complexity of childhood through the eyes of an adult whose childhood is both ever present, and long past. These paintings take an unsentimental look at childhood. They revisit the freedom, the physicality, and the complex world of being a young girl. I was fortunate to grow up at a time of unsupervised play, long bike rides, and little interference from adults throughout the day. We played on the streets and stoops in our neighborhood in Queens, as well as in empty lots, and parks. The world we created belonged to us with its own hierarchy based on age and perceived power.

Born in New York City. I am a painter who uses simplified space and bold color to create psychologically charged narrative paintings. My paintings explore social issues that have included: addiction (heroin), survival (cancer), relationships and alienation, and social change (in China). My most comprehensive body of work, Tales, began as a series of paintings, then grew into the basis for my bilingual (English/Spanish) book and film (of the same title), Tales: A Cautionary Story about Heroin Addiction. This film has been screened in numerous international film festivals.
