SUN IS SHINING ABOVE OUR VILLAGE Painting

Through abstraction, I create healing spaces. The grid is a door to a parallel universe, an opportunity for the construction of an alternative space. The abstract form allows for a more personal experience of the healing space. I take inspiration from the mind’s response to trauma and the dynamic process behind its quest for finding balance and peace. It is vital for us to give a physical form to this virtual space. Using the simplicity of geometric shapes, I create condensed images that unpack a space larger than life; the same way a haiku carries a larger meaning than its length. Shapes and colours can be poetic, joyful, energetic and, more importantly, familiar. I want my paintings to be welcoming places for the viewer to take temporary refuge. I grew up in an environment filled with stressful events over which I had no control. This filled my mind with anxieties that repressed harmful memories and I was left with little history of myself. In my earlier work, I attempted to reconstruct my much-needed past in abstract form. My paintings allow for the mind’s healing space to materialise in physical form and aid in bringing into harmony the often harsh reality of our lives with the mind's need for refuge so that one does not overshadow the other. In balance and harmony, I find peace.
