Mohammed Quraiseh (b. 1965) is originally from Baghdad and today lives and works between Toronto, Canada and Amsterdam, Holland. Working primarily with paper bonded to the canvas and mixed media, one of the primary preoccupations in his work is the earth and its erosion. Materials of War ‘Erosion Renaissance’ is a published solo project, held in Casablanca at the Marsam ateliers. Quraiseh had felt the need to testify to what extent Baghdad had been ravaged by the war. Employing the rusted, eroded and corroded materials of conflict, Quraiseh’s work confronts death with optimism; breathing new life into his materials and sharing their stories with the world. Physical Nature Much of Quraiseh’s inspiration comes from nature, observing climate change and discovering nature's ruins caused by unnecessary need. The multi-sensual experience associated with nature is very much evident when looking at his work. Full of relief, texture, and colour, Quraiseh’s work evokes a strong degree of physicality. His work is situated between abstraction and abstract expressionism with inspiration being drawn from the likes of Anselm Kiefer, David Hockney and Georg Baselitz. Gaining Worldwide Recognition Mohammed Quraiseh graduated from the Academy of Fine Art, Baghdad and the Royal Academy of Fine Art, The Hague. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe, the US and the Middle East, notably at the Rijksmuseum, Leiden and the Cairo Biennale, Egypt. Quraiseh’s works are today housed in numerous collections worldwide.
