ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I try to challenge the canvas' traditional role of being just a surface for painting. By mixing raw blank pieces of canvas with painted ones, I get a more tangible textured feel of surface, and give the canvas an opportunity to show its individuality as a material. Most importantly for me, this process creates a feeling of tension which I hope to achieve in this portrait.

I am an artist living in San Francisco Bay Area. People is the main subject of my work. In a single space of a painting I combine, by sewing together, images of people with pieces of raw gray or primed white canvas. I observe how the canvas hides parts of the images and deforms them, how threads and seams disturb the flatness of the surface itself, how that all creates tension and intrigue within the composition. It creates situations of something hidden, unknown, unconscious, forbidden, forgotten, lost... - all the things that interest me in life and in art.
