ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece deals with the plight of endangered animals, using vintage book covers as a painting surface. I was also working with the idea of combining and layering patterns-from the Sycamore bark to the leopard's spots to the butterflies' wings, ending with the red laser beams trained at the big cat. I added the genus/species (Danaus plexippus) to impart the sense of a scientific catalog, which in future may be the only place this creature can be found. Also, I found it rather humorous sounding.
