Sandsfoot Castle is one of two castles on opposites sides of Portland harbour built by King Henry VIII to defend Portland Harbour against invasion, this one, Sandsfoot (the Weymouth side), was built on a cliff edge and has now sadly fallen into ruins with one third of it a jumble of stones on the foreshore. The other, (Portland Castle), is still complete and whole and is open to visitors.
