Scarlet coloured beast was started in early 2017, and developed over 2018. Initially it was a response to media stories that saw Ivanka Trump as a good influence on her father, at a time when President Trump was withdrawing the US from the Paris climate change accord and threatening war around the world. I saw this beautiful, privileged young woman as the face of liberal idealism - riding on the beast of capitalist militarism. She sort of sanctifies conquest. The roots of this idea go further back, to a sketch called Grace, inspired Grace Mugabe's threats of violence against political opponents in Zimbabwe - she was riding on the back of the African liberation movement, but she abandoned the ideological reasons for liberation war and instead promised despotic slavery. This idea of feminine charm being a mask for greed and conquest is also reflected in the 'Britannia' archetype. A female guardian sits atop the British empire, lending grace to process of bloody colonisation. Finally, I saw a video about an Amercian fundamentalist vision of Armageddon. The Bible's Revelation describes the end of the world occurring around 2,000 years after Christ. A false prophet would come and lead the world to war. Babylon, mother of harlots, is described riding upon a scarlet coloured beast. This has been called an allegory for the Babylon and Rome, and also for the EU. In the bible, Babylon and the Beast are described as accompanied by 10 crowns and 7 Horns, which might be 10 kings and 7 armies, and here I have shown these as 10 spirit kings, like ring wraiths, and 7 phalluses worn as trophies by Babylon. They symbolise phallic power annexed by the feminine, a reference to emergence of feminine power within capitalist militarism - women taking the role of torturer in the CIA, Hilary Clinton's role in illegal wars in Libya and Syria, and her delight in the death of her opponents. But, to be clear: the feminine figure does not represent woman, she presents a certain aspect of femininity found in man and woman. I can visualise the beast as female torturers in Abu Grail, and the female rider as the Obama, whose ethnicity and nerdy liberal face masks an administration carrying out a bloody program of neo-colonisation. The landscape and sky comes from a photograph of heavily polluted Chinese industrial city.
