ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I liked the original photo this is based on. However, the road was on the left, leading the eye out of frame on the left and the stream was on the right, leading the eye out of frame on the right. So I swapped them, and extended the road back towards the viewer. Now it and the stream act to bring the eye into the picture, towards the hill with the tongue of mist covering its summit. There seems to be a lot more moisture in the atmosphere in Europe. I don't mean that it rains there all the time, but when I've been there, Scotland, France, Sicily, Portugal, the Mediterranean have all concealed their distant features behind veils of humidity. It explains why all the books on painting, written by Northern Hemisphere authors, talk so much about atmospheric perspective - and why that seemed so over-emphasised to someone learning to paint in the limpid air of New Zealand.
