ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The first painting in "Scroll" exhibition. The painting is divided into two halves. The yellow line driving down the middle of the painting acts as a demarcation between the myth and the modern. The left side covered in white words are various myths, a collage of ancient stories that shape belief systems and actions even today in the 21st century. The right side is modernity, it is void save for a small collage taken from the book "The Soft Machine" by William S. Burroughs which states "Last fuck for Johnny" dipicting the raw reality of a nihilistic world where the future contains only bleak prospects of a dying sun and a universe consumed by black holes. The myth offers an alternative to the scientific narrative and in this painting one is challenged to not think of myth as preserved in the glass of a sterile museum, the museumification of myth so to speak, but rather to think of myth as practice. Inspired by the ancestral veneration practices in Vietnam this painting is the center piece of "Scroll" exhibition.

David Ch. Evans is an American artist residing in Hanoi. Working across multiple mediums to explore the connection between language and objects. His works depict the narratives and non narratives of space which he calls Concrete Mythology that create densities of significance made visible through text fields where words act as protagonist and antagonist, as divider and unifier, to create a composition of meaning on the canvas. These visual relationships between language, spaces and objects make evident the disjointed nature of urban centers and create a « language beyond linguistics »
