ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspired by women's plight under colonialism, and the sad realisation that to this day, most European colonial powers still reap the benefits of the exploitation and genocide they perpetrated on Africa. I hope I can make you feel the anger, the patience, the frustration of someone who chooses to bide their time, but in the process still has to fight every day to keep her family and herself alive. One of the other reasons I decided to paint this beautiful woman, is that I realised how very few black nudes are out there. This piece is purposefully not done in the provocative European style of nude where the women where portrayed to be the willing victim. This African Beauty is not subjugated into removing her clothing. She is naked because clothing would diminish her confidence, her magnificence.
