Shell Dance is inspired by the way I might feel sitting on a wonderful beach, midday. There are people playing, colorful splotches of suits and umbrellas...There is hot sun, cool blue breeze, beautiful sand and many seashells closer to shore...dancing in the sunlight. I am most always inspired by elements of Nature in conjunction with a human moods or emotions. It's as though I seek to dissolve the form of a natural element and simultaneously, pull or build, emotion or moods into form. I use acrylic paints because I enjoy the versatility of application they allow... I can layer, goop, smooth out areas, apply rough strokes etc...I also enjoy the flexibility to work fast and then slowly. I never know what pace a piece and I will follow.

Kathryn Fortson has exhibited in group and solo shows throughout the Southeastern U.S. Her paintings and prints are held in private, corporate, and public collections world wide. "For me, abstract painting begins by connecting to a state of being or maybe connecting to an emotion. Sometimes being an object or element in nature. To be a shell … or to be a blade of grass in the wind. And, if not a tangible thing, I often connect to states of being. Can emotion form motion? Would it form line, depth shadows, movement ….how might laughter play with colors and light? When I am painting, I don't really think about what brush to pick up or color to mix. It is as though my connected state and my painting skills have their own dance. It is a little bit meditative, a little bit of disassociation and a lot of surrendering. I hope my work can evoke curiosity and perhaps encourage a different outlook or perspective. Maybe nudge the viewer to bypass one's typical interpretations and open to the intangible energy an art piece may offer. Kathryn Fortson's studio is in Alpharetta, Georgia USA. She accepts commissions.
