ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I remember going down to this market when I was a child some fifty years ago living nearby. I had a chance to visit the market a month or two ago and, although there were echoes of the past, the traders and clientele seemed somewhat different. I said to one of the Asian 'vendors' that when I came down here in the fifties, if you saw a Black or a Asian face they looked out of place; now, I look out of place. Fortunately he (and I) saw the funny side and we had a bit of a laugh....

I have loved to paint since childhood and was lucky enough to spend some four years in Switzerland at school where, noticing that I had an interest in painting, they sent me for Art Classes (one day a week) with a local Dutch/Canadian painter called Will Burdet. He used to take me out landscape painting on Wednesday afternoons amidst some of the most picturesque scenery in the world and I stood and painted next to him whilst he created beautiful landscapes. I left Switzerland with a letter of introduction to the painter Ivon Hitchens. The note stayed in my wallet for weeks, then months, then disappeared.
