About The Artwork

Available as Limited Edition prints (out of 25). Overall framed prints measure 22" x 17" x 1.25" with inner print measuring 16" x 11" surrounded by a double black picture mount measuring 3". They come with a certificate of authenticity sealed at the back. They are ready for hanging. This series of prints was selected for exhibition at Artexpo New York 2022 ( https://redwoodartgroup.com/rave/jackie-flanagan/ ) .The Shetland series is a study of the shared temporality of pockets of deep-time and inner-consciousness. There is a sense of journeying into the unknown in the sub-arctic region. The use of bitumen gloss paint as a medium can capture this sense of mystery. The resulting rippling effect creates a decorative relief plane which inevitably captures the light and in doing so, consequently connects and unifies each piece (Shetland I - VII). This rippling effect also resembles the dark waters of the North Sea. There seems to be a contested space between materiality and the ethereal. I'm an Irish Visual Artist and Archaeologist and I specialise in Painting and Drawing. My artwork uses, what I like to call, ''geographical shapes/compositions'', to create an anchoring or framework for an in-between space plane of archaeological inquiry. This plane explores an archaeology of the unknown, the subconscious and the metaphysical through materiality, automatism and imagination. The need for the archaeologist to break the soil in order to reveal hidden layers is a practical necessity. Hence, I like to build up layers of media and then erase (referred to as ''additive subtraction'' by Jasper Johns), so as to reveal what lies beneath...which are usually, pockets of colour, areas of intense light or even the sheer canvas itself! This space-plane for introspection can also find me mark-making and sometimes creating forms and images from my imagination. This introspective plane seems to also imbue a spiritual quality in my works, which can also be said, too, of the often heavier textured ''geographical shapes'' when they capture the light! All in all, there seems to be a fusion between the physical and metaphysical which entices the viewer to touch the canvas. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions! Thanks for your interest, Jackie.
