About The Artwork
My figurative paintings are inspired by children at play, particularly my two daughters. I am interested in portraying their mood and movement in a fresh, understated way. Keeping the initial sketched marks in paint as an integral part of the finished piece - rather than building up over them in thicker layers - helps to retain that feeling. In some ways I am almost using the paint as a drawing medium, such as ink, gouache or watercolour. I hope that I have captured and might convey something of the experience of the child to the viewer. By painting directly onto the clear primed linen and allowing that certain amount of psychological space around the figure further enhances that feeling of the child being in her own world. My work has been described as ephemeral and dreamlike.
