The paintings of Dutch artist Arris Tijsseling (1959) are both abstract and figurative and evoke intense feelings. Tijsseling uses many layers to create depth, special light/ dark effects and just the right color combinations. The details of the paintings in relation to the overall piece of art create an intense experience. Tijsseling; ‘I think a painting should have beauty in itself and be free of emotion. My starting point is always based on my feelings and not on my emotions. Color, theme and technique result in a specific feeling which the painting evokes in you. Sometimes I’m caught in ornamentation, other times I’m inspired by the Silk Road or Babylon. I also like to work with primary colors and clear forms. “I often try to find a form of tranquility in my compositions, with a touch of humor, because that reflects my personality.” Tijsseling regularly organizes group expositions and lectures in his studio.
