Marie Jiménez (b. 1991 Dominican Republic) lives and work in New York City. She received a full scholarship to attend to the BFA program at Parsons the New School for design. Her first body of work were banned from the graduate exhibition of Altos de Chavon where she got her AAS in fine arts. These works were then selected to be in the 2011 Biennial of the Museum of Modern art in Santo Domingo, Dom. Rep. The museum's biennial got her numerous press articles which discussed the explicit images used in her work and how they exposed homosexuality in the Dominican Society. She has also exhibited at the Centro Leon Jimenes in Santiago, Dom. Rep, and recently in "Status Quo" an exhibition held in the Museo de Arte Moderno of the Dominican Republic with the intentions of promoting video as an art form. My practice is concerned with the marginalized identity and how it is conceived in relation to the norm. Even though the marginal position is in the periphery, I am interested in how video and other mediums can become a tool to question and analyze the possibility of having the marginal brought to the centre; most of my work take the form of video for the potential it has to widen the reach of the artwork and to effect an impact. I start working from the personal, which often creates a space for intimacy between the viewer and the art work. It also gave me the possibility to start discussing Identity, which is often discussed in relation to the body (in most works the naked body). The discourses in my work are explored through a romantic, aestheticized lens which in a broader philosophical sense speak of love, and politically speaks of justice.
