What/who inspired the work? When we were living in London a friend of mine, much to my surprise always used to cry out: -“Greetings Mr. Magpie! I salute you!”. when seeing a magpie, when we were out and about. When I asked about it she recited this old nursery rhyme, based on superstition. It varies a bit depending on where you live but this is the most common one : One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret, Never to be told. I wasn’t familiar with the story behind this as I grew up in Sweden with completely other stories alas as I love word games, rhymes and find superstitions and folklore fascinatingI found this very picturesque and inspiring to try illustrate. What do you hope its viewers will feel/think? Maybe it will remind some of childhood’s precious moments as it’s a nursery rhyme, the voice of a grandparent’s superstitious sayings or will inspire to look into more of these old stories and imaginative truths from the past? Why did you choose the medium, subject matter, style? Thinking about the hectic laughter of the magpies when in parliament I thought to use very hard contours and bold colours to help highlighting all the details in this piece. I wanted to give personality to each bird and hope to describe their chaotic battle when grabbing the treasure.

Sweden
I am a Swedish artist who has been passionately drawing and painting since childhood. I work as a full-time artist, continuously honing my skills. I primarily use oil-paint and prefer to paint on canvas. My work is often described as imaginative realism and I am driven by the continual challenges in creating incredible paintings where my favourite theme of realistic wildlife is entering the world of surrealism.
