Painting: Graphite, Pencil, Household, Paper on Wood.
Based on sketches made on the Isle of Skye, Scotland.
"Broadly speaking, my practice is an investigation in to environments. More specifically, I’m interested in various opposing sub-themes that relate to the environment both natural and built. Themes such as; transience/endurance, control/chaos, perfection/imperfection. I like the tension that these discordant pairings present and how they echo life’s own contradictions.
I explore my subject in many ways, employing a variety of media and techniques but drawing is at the centre of my practice. I make sketches in the field and later develop them in the studio. It’s my intention to maintain some of the immediacy that is characteristic of the original drawings. Inevitably aspects are lost (and gained) in translation. I’m interested in this transition from impulsive sketch to more resolved outcome and the influence that both the environment and the artists studio have on the final outcome.
My studio practice, although varied, is united by a keen awareness of material qualities and an approach which is partly influenced by traditional eastern aesthetics. Ultimately, my aim is to uncover something less tangible about my subject."
