About The Artwork

Inspired by a recent trip to Greece, this painting is the second in large series called Metopes & Friezes. Being of Greek descent myself, seeing the ancient art of my heritage had a profound effect on me: it reaffirmed my artistic aesthetic as well as my sense of identity. The Brutal Robber Skiron is from a section of a metope on the Athenian Treasury in Delphi. It shows the body of Skiron who infamously robbed devotes as they made the pilgrimage to the Oracle for advise. Theseus, the famous Athenian Hero, killed Skiron by throwing him off the Kakia Skala, the dangerous stairway on the seaside road from Athens to Corinth. I was inspired to paint this piece because of the dynamic nature of the broken body and the gorgeous textures of sheared and cracked marble. I wanted to pay homage to the artists and storytellers that birthed western civilization as well as capture my own personal experience of these artifacts. This oil painting weaves together ancient and contemporary art in an entirely unique way. The oil painting is created on a sealed birch wood panel, cradled to be hung as-is with clean modern lines. The stiffness of the wood is the most archival surface for oil paint (the flex of canvas can crack paint over time) and also retains the polished brushwork beautifully.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

The first time I painted with oils I knew this is what I was meant to do the rest of my life. Everything about oil paint resonates with me. As a person who relishes corporeal experiences, the olfactory delight of linseed oil and the visual richness of glistening pigments intoxicates me. As an artist who approaches the easel with only a silhouette of an idea, the range of oil paint-- from translucent glazes to opaque, juicy passages--inspires the spontaneity and experimentation that is so essential to my creative process. When paint stays wet for several days, anything becomes possible. Brushstrokes can be manipulated, scraped off, or remixed into new colors. In this flexible state, art becomes more present, more capable of capturing the subtle changes of mood and emotion. Oil painting makes me fearless in this knowing. Oil painting brings me closer to myself.
