About The Artwork
Highly textured abstract painting. This painting is part of an ongoing series called "Tufa Dreams." Tufa is a volcanic rock that appears to have warm tones of yellow and beige and functions as architectural building material. The exploration of tufa as a subject in my abstract paintings comes from my desire to connect with the land my ancestors lived in for thousands of years. I look back at the rough landscape of ancient Armenia and try to reinvent this place in ways that have a contemporary feel through the process of painting.

She earned an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1990. Bargamian’s work is inspired by the history of abstraction, her Armenian-American identity, nature, Art Brut, memories, etc. The additive/subtractive process she uses creates highly textured surfaces.
