Theo Matoff was born in Vancouver, Canada. He moved to California to study architecture at USC. He was released from American army service in Paris, where he had weekly critiques of his artwork at the ateliers of André L'Hôte and Ossip Zadkine. Theo then attended the University of Florence, Italy, receiving a Doctorate in Architecture. He came to the UK, where he formed the Interdisciplinary Studies Unit in Leeds, combining art, architecture and surveying. Theo then headed Schools of Architecture in Plymouth and Leicester, while painting and exhibiting his art. His studio is in Bushey Hertfordshire, where he currently lives. The content of the painting includes the emotions expressed in its medium and making - acrylics, charcoal and pastels. "In some paradoxical way," he says, "we understand the Universal through the personal." His works are included in private collections in the USA, Germany and the UK. Additional examples of Theo's art work may be found on www.matoff.com To mark his 90th birthday Theo has donated artworks to benefit many charities in the UK, including: Bushey Museum Jewish Care Peace Hospice, Watford Norwood Head for Change Royal Cornwall Hospitals Chai Cancer Care Centaurus Trust Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability North London Hospice Keech Cottage Children's Hospice Jewish National Fund Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital British Red Cross West Herts.
