Art Description

Painting: Acrylic, Fiberglass, Resin on Other, Canvas.

John’s new body of work, created this past year, creates tension between tranquility and disruption / uncertainty and resolve. Various narratives and metaphors are used to connect and at the same time leave an element of mystery and discovery in the quest to attain a balance that can be so illusive. His primary source of inspiration comes from spending nearly his entire life around the sea. Having traveled to many parts of the world to surf, John is able to connect the different cultures, the abstract multi-faceted inner formations beneath the ocean and emotional challenges which are then interpreted into his paintings. In his current work, the ocean becomes a metaphor for life experiences - the tranquility to the disruption, to the search for balance and resolve.

Using resin and fiberglass for the painting’s surface naturally creates inconsistencies and adds to the narrative. The resin can evoke tranquility and yet become disruptive - the perfect and the imperfect in the quest for balance.
