ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspired by godfather of glam rock and the patron saint of defiant outcasts - Mr. David Bowie. Mr. Bowie was not an LGBTQ activist in the traditional sense. Instead, he provided a soundtrack and visuals which reshaped our world. In other words, he was not a campaigner for gay rights, but Mr. Bowie’s art complemented a larger fight for acceptance and civil rights. His message reached the farthest corners of the planet helping so many to get through their life keeping the believe in themselves and brighter days to come! Mr. Bowie always was the favorite musician of my parents. Never the less his identity and support for the LGBTQ community was a big taboo to mention or discuss. Art like this is always filtered through the cultural veil and narrative of every country. While this filter tries to remove important details of the message, at the same time the filter itself gets slowly effected and transformed by the beauty of this partially forbidden art. And this is what I am trying to reflect through the Russian traditional flower ornament khokhloma layered like a veil over the image. The ornament is there, but it has lost its traditional restricted colors and is already transformed into something brighter. Because positive change can be slowed down, but cannot be stopped!
