Painting: Oil on Canvas.
This painting was inspired by a horse I've been close to for a few years. He was 7 when he was gelded (castrated), and I met him soon after. I offered to help "back" him (get him to accept saddle and human) for a friend. He was a classic "problem" horse for many reasons.
I don't believe there are many problem horses in the world.
There were a few firsts between us, and whatever I asked of him, I asked respectfully. My objective was to work with him, rather than against him. The indescribably humbling level of trust that is built through this kind of intuitive journey with an animal is quite extraordinary. We built up a soul-connection, if you will. In working with him at his own pace, I had the great honour of establishing a wonderful friendship.
I believe that in order for anything to thrive, it needs free will. This painting is an image of him leaving me (a symbol of humanity and domestication), walking away into the distance to join his herd.
