About The Artwork

I got properly hooked on sailing, well racing, after watching the 1983 America's Cup. I always loved the Metre boats and over time was fortunate enough to race on some. I remember my first time out in a modern 6-metre. It was a pretty crazy experience and I was glad to receive unexpected respect from some well-known sailors. I went on to race on a number of others including a classic six, too, with some pretty cool results in various events. This weekend I'm racing on a classic 8-metre which kind of gets me close to a 'full house' or 'straight flush', only the 5.5 metre and modern 8 to go! This is 'St Kitts', a modern 6-metre that was built in the late Eighties. It's quite an early watercolour and in many ways I'm surpirsed it has never sold in spite of having been shown to the current owner... I love the reflections this angle produces on the hull and you get the impression that the crewmember sticking his head up from the cockpit is wet...that's what happens in a Six, you get wet...very wet!

Born London in 1969, I grew up being encouraged to draw and my school studies ended up concentrating on art related subjects.I moved to the south coast of England in 1992 which enabled me to develop my experience in sailing and other outdoor sports.Having always created work in either pencil or pastel, in 2002 I decided to teach myself to paint; initially in watercolour and soon received a number of commissions. A year or so later I took the opportunity to paint full time. I now work predominantly in oil with some drawings and intricate sketches in pencil. I also indulge in a little photography, too. My inspirations may not always be reflected in my work but I list J Steven Dews, Shane Couch, Jamie Medlin, David Curtis, Montague Dawson, Steven Dews, Derek Gardner, Ian Houston, Robert King, David Sawyer, Peter Smith, Richard Thorn, JMW Turner, Vettriano and John Webster as some of the painters whose work I observe closely.
